Is a School Dress Code Necessary?

Do you get distracted by shoulders and knee caps? Or does it not bother you if dress code is actually a necessary thing to enforce into a school or should we be focusing on more pressing matters. Does how people dress actually affect learning and is it necessary?

Dresscode is an unnecessary part of school that limits self expression. The enforcement of dress code mainly targets girls and how much skin they are showing because how they dress can be seen as a distraction.

Dress Code just makes the day harder than it has to be. Most children are in school for 8 hours or more. They shouldn’t have to worry about how they’re dressed and if they can get in trouble for wearing a tank top or holes above the knee. 90% of schools restrict girls’ clothing like skirts and tank tops but only 20% actually target males.

High school and middle schools are seen as the time to find the good and bad about yourself, and how you dress and self expression are a pretty big part of that. Dress Codes in most schools are very strict which can cause students to feel restricted and closed off. Having such a strict dress code can limit diversity within your school and self expression.

The main issue with dress codes is that it mainly targets girls and makes them feel weird and uncomfortable with a bunch of adults telling them why their clothing isn’t appropriate and it’s a “distraction”. Boys in school can wear the same thing and go through the whole or half a day without getting dress-coded because it is not seen as “distracting”.

You may say that it is a distraction and that it keeps children from learning, or that is not appropriate in a school environment. With that statement I could understand where they are coming from but it is not actually a distraction. Shoulders and knees have never distracted anyone and it’s more of a distraction when a student gets called out in class for dress code or pulled out of class for it and then that student loses learning time.

We could unban things that don’t need to be banned like tank tops, holes above the knee and leggings because they are not hurting anyone. Dress code should be less outdated, less important in school, target males as well for wearing very short shorts and muscle tees but girls cant if you’re going to have a dress code it must be fair.

Dress code is outdated. Having certain things in dresscode is fine like very short shorts, too much midriff or anything you wouldn’t wear in front of your mother cause those could actually be a “distraction”. But targeting girls, making them uncomfortable, and saying there being a “distraction” is not okay; it’s very sexist and extremely outdated. Get rid of banning things that aren’t actually an issue and actually make the dresscode fair.
