Should Students Wear School Uniforms?

Should Students Wear School Uniforms?

A uniform is a specific outfit worn by a group of people that helps identify members of a group or in this case a school. There is lots of controversy that goes with uniforms. Should they be worn? Or are they unreasonable?

So, are uniforms necessary to wear during school?

Uniforms can cause many problems in a school environment. Not only could they be very uncomfortable due to poor fabric choices. Such as, itchy, stiff and lack of fitting designs. It also can restrict personal restriction by not allowing students to choose their own type of clothing. Being unable to express themselves and having to wear certain clothes could potentially cause physical discomfort and psychological distress.

Secondly, having uniforms does not have an effect on behavior or academics. The Ohio State University conducted a study that states “School uniforms were not linked to any differences in bullying or social anxiety in the children. But those who had to wear uniforms reported lower levels of school belonging than did those who attended schools with no uniform requirements.” This proves that uniforms make no significant difference in children’s feelings, academics or behavior.

The third reason that uniforms should not be mandatory is because some parents have a low income. Forcing parents to pay for pricey uniforms can cause parents not to be able to provide necessities for their families. Such as, food, pay their bills, and keep gas in their car. Being able to dress independently can save money.

However, on the other hand wearing uniforms can bring a sense of unity and reduce distractions. When everyone wears the same thing it would not be as distracting for people. Also, the dress code would be easier to follow.

In conclusion, uniforms should not be mandatory for children to wear during school. Having the freedom to choose your outfits will make each child feel fair.
