Sparks run near my fingers, dancing along the wooden sparkler stick. The sounds of them fizzling fills my ears, along with the cheers of the people around me, waving their sparklers high, doing weird motions with them that probably look ridiculous. And then, the booms start. Colorful fireworks streak across the sky. I have enough vision to see the light of them. If I’m lucky, maybe I’ll be able to see a few colors as well.

Hello everyone, it’s me, Landon Bryson, writing to you with a hip-hip Happy July 4th! Today, relax. Today, celebrate the freedom that we were granted all those years ago. Even if you feel like you have no freedom because you’re chained to a job or school or whatever, think about other countries, and consider yourself lucky.

Fireworks. Every single year, at my house, we hear fireworks. The loud BOOM of them makes our dog cower, but what can we do?

When I was in seventh grade, I was doing a math assignment on a brailler, a kind of typewriter looking device. I needed paper, and we didn’t have regular braille paper, so I asked my teacher for a piece of paper. She handed it to me, I looked at it, and said, “ew why does it look like that”?

Sorry to bum some people out when I say this, but the paper was orange. That was my first time actually recognizing that something looked different, and from then on I started looking at different colors, trying to see which ones I could comprehend and which ones I couldn’t. (Blue is the best. Orange still sucks).

So, today, when the fireworks burst into the sky, I’m going to look at them, and I’m going to see if I can tell what colors are what, if there are different colors I mean. I don’t know much about fireworks!

I have two more things to tell you that have absolutely nothing to do with each other! I’m not at any camps this week guys so this is a lot more, writing random stuff, less, writing important things that happen to me.

I used to love reading, book after book after book. But at the start of this year I got into a book slump, due to school and everything else I was going through, and I simply could not read a book. But now, I am back into reading. Last week, I made a goal. I will read 100 books this year. I figured, I’ve already read three this year, only 97 to go right? (They were pretty good books too)! As of today, July 4, I am at 7 books out of 100. Wish me luck guys!

And my last bit of news: I have friends who are blind, not as chill and awesome as me but they try. Two of them have started a podcast where they discuss all things having to do with being blind. It’s educational, but also entertaining, and somewhat hilarious. I love a good blind joke, and they make plenty. The podcast is titled Didn’t See That Coming. Episodes come out every Saturday, and you can find the podcast on YouTube and Spotify.

Anyways, that’s it for this week. I hope everyone has a chance to relax today! Happy July 4th, and until next time, it’s your favorite blind Jacket!
