Back In Session

Well, the doors have been opened. Kids are now filling the halls. Teachers move around the building like Lord of the Rings travelers, running through familiar yet treacherous territory. And behind it all, behind the rows of kids, stands a white cane. The person holding the white cane… he’s pretty cool if you ask me.

Hello Jackets! It’s me, Landon Bryson, writing to you during the first week of school. It’s crazy being back here, knowing that I’m a sophomore now, knowing I’ll be 16 next year. I’m definitely growing up.

My younger brother is now in high school, a Freshman amongst Freshmen. I love that he’s growing up, but it also means that I’m growing up, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. But every time I say I feel old to an adult, they remind me of their own age, so I guess it doesn’t really matter. I guess I’m not old if I’m below thirty. Is that right? Comment on this blog and tell me the age you think is when you start to get old.

In my first paragraph, I mentioned a white cane. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the stick that I carry around. It helps me not run into things. Poles, tables, chairs, doors, rope fences, parked cars.

I’m not sure if this is a blind community thing, but I know it’s a me thing. If you see me, and you’re helping me look for my cane, do NOT, call it a stick. Sticks are things that grow on trees. My cane is a cane, and it deserves to be called that. I actually named my cane Hugo, after Hurricane Hugo. Don’t question it.

In more serious news, Buford High School is thriving. I know that we have had our ups and downs over the years.

Mr. Michael Belk, BHS’s principal, has had the amazing opportunity to be promoted to Director of Secondary Programs at another school district. While it’s not the happiest thing for all BHS students, it is so exciting for him. After all the time and effort he has put into his job, for himself, his staff and his students, he deserves this chance. I know I can speak for everyone when I say there is no doubt that he will benefit everyone he meets at his new job. We will miss him, but we will always thank him.

Anyways, that’s it for this week. Everyone have a great weekend. Try to have an even better time next week. Until then, it’s your favorite blind Jacket!
