Jenny Mills’ and Abby Faulkenberry’s classes were given a STEM challenge where students competed against each other while working in pairs to throw a plastic cup backwards–over his/her head– in a manner that would enable the partner to catch the cup inside another cup. This activity encouraged collaboration, planning, and critical thinking skills. It also assisted in improving hand-eye coordination and communication skills. Students experimented with a variety of throwing techniques with one student discovering that spinning the cup as one throws it keeps the cup in a more upright position.
